Butterbeer Recipe from Harry Potter

Harry Potter’s butterbeer: how many times have you heard this name and thought about this recipe? It is one of the most special recipes ever and it’s unique because it’s been sent by the producers of Harry Potter at the Huffington Post a few years ago and does not contain beer just because it is designed for the youngest.

Not being a recipe of tradition, the classic and original recipe does not exist but you can try it at home by mixing ingredients and imagination as I did. The final flavor of this drink is sparkling because it remembers beer but at the same time it’s also spicy and remembers the pumpkin latte.

You can use vanilla ice cream (sold to the supermarket if you’re from the US) but you can also replace it with a mix of non-alcoholic beer and vanilla extract by calculating 750 ml of non-alcoholic beer and a tablespoon of vanilla extract.

Do not think it is a recipe of incredible difficulty because it is not. In fact, it is a milkshake to which butter and soda are added to give it a more particular flavor and above all to make it heavier than the classic smoothie. Surely a theme party or a Halloween dinner with Harry Potter’s butterbeer can really make people happy.

This is my recipe to make the perfect butterbeer from Harry Potter: if you search online there are thousands of recipes but this tastes just great and it looks more like a latte than a proper beer because of the ice cream. Give it a try and let me know!

Ingredients for 4 people

  • 500 ml of vanilla ice cream
  • 4 tablespoons of butter at room temperature
  • 80 grams of sugar cane
  • 2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg

For the vanilla cream soda

  • 240 ml of water
  • 450 grams of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Soda


  1. Prepare the vanilla cream soda by heating 240 ml of water and 480 grams of sugar until this dissolves and cool. Add the vanilla extract, mix and put in a refrigerator so, when using it, add soda to make the compound liquid;
  2. Beat in a bowl the softened butter with the spices and the sugar so once the whole is mixed, pour the ice cream, mix and put in a freezer;
  3. Heat the vanilla cream until it becomes hot but not burnt (average 3, max. 4 minutes);
  4. Pull the ice cream out of the fridge, shake it, pour it into the beer mugs and cover it with the hot “beer”;
  5. Add whipped cream to the surface before serving, even with cinnamon sticks.
